Sakari Vanharanta studied in MD/PhD programme at the University of Helsinki under the supervision of Lauri A. Aaltonen. After spending some time in clinical training, he joined Joan Massagué’s laboratory at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, New York, where he worked on the molecular mechanisms of metastatic cancer progression. Dr. Vanharanta joined the MRC Cancer Unit as group leader in 2014.
Dr. Vanharanta’s lab is interested in identifying genetic dependencies of metastasis using VHL mutant renal cancer through multi-disciplinary approach combines experimental cancer models, high-throughput genomics, functional genetics, bioinformatics and clinical association analysis. The exploration of transcriptional regulators in support of cancer progression and metastasis will help in identification of functionally relevant biomarkers as well as therapeutic targets.
